Fuel and utilities for canal boats
Most narrowboats run on red diesel, which you can pick up at boatyards and fuel boats along the canal network. Since the HMRC split-duty rules changed, you'll need to declare the proportion used for propulsion versus domestic use. Keep your receipts tidy.
Water points are usually free and maintained by the Canal & River Trust, but they can be busy in summer. Carry enough water to last a few days, especially on quieter stretches. Pump-out stations charge around five to ten pounds per session, and some are card-only now.
Calor gas and other bottled LPG can be harder to find on the cut, so it's worth refilling whenever you pass a supplier. Coal and solid fuel for stoves are seasonal but usually available from boatyards and chandleries between October and March.
