Canal Cruising Rings

UK canal rings — circular cruises that link multiple canals. Compare length, locks, days and difficulty for the Cheshire, Four Counties, Warwickshire, Pennine, Thames, Avon and others.

Canal Cruising Rings — Index

A canal cruising "ring" is a continuous loop that lets you start and finish at the same point without retracing your steps. UK rings vary from a 7-mile urban loop in central Birmingham to a 250-mile cross-country marathon via the Thames. Most fall into the 70–150 mile range and suit a fortnight's hire.

This index covers the twelve mainstream rings. Stats below are approximate — sources (Pennine Waterways, Canal & River Trust, IWA, Wikipedia, Waterway Routes) sometimes disagree by a few miles or locks depending on whether short branches and junction approaches are counted. Where stats are particularly contested, the per-ring page hedges.

Comparison table

Ring Approx. miles Approx. locks Typical days (4-hr pace) Difficulty
Birmingham Mini Ring ~7 ~24 1–2 Easy (urban, lock-heavy short loop)
Droitwich Ring ~21 ~32 3–5 Easy–Moderate (short Severn river section)
Stourbridge Ring ~30 ~60 4–6 Moderate (Dudley Tunnel restrictions / Netherton variant)
Black Country Ring ~75 ~73 7–10 Moderate
Warwickshire Ring ~100 ~116 8–12 Moderate (Hatton flight)
Stourport Ring ~74 ~118 7–10 Moderate–Hard (Tardebigge, Severn)
Cheshire Ring ~97 ~92 10–14 Moderate–Hard (Rochdale Nine, Marple)
Avon Ring ~109 ~129 10–14 Hard (Tardebigge, two rivers)
Four Counties Ring ~110 ~94 10–14 Moderate–Hard (Harecastle, Heartbreak Hill)
Leicester Ring ~145 ~100 12–16 Hard (river Soar / Trent, long tunnels)
North Pennine Ring ~162 ~198 18–21 Very Hard (Rochdale, Wigan, Bingley)
South Pennine Ring ~70 ~198 12–16 Hardest (Standedge, Rochdale, lock density)
Thames Ring ~250 ~175 21–28 Very Hard (Thames, distance, scheduling)

How to choose

For a long weekend (3–4 days): Droitwich Ring or Birmingham Mini Ring.

For a one-week hire: Stourbridge, Black Country or Warwickshire (with a fit crew). Stourport is achievable but tight.

For a fortnight's hire: Avon, Cheshire, Four Counties or Leicester. These are the "classic" two-week rings most hire firms market.

For three weeks or more: Thames Ring or North Pennine Ring.

For experienced crews only: South Pennine Ring (Standedge Tunnel and Rochdale scheduling), North Pennine Ring (Rochdale and Wigan), Thames Ring (river skills, distance). Avoid these as a first long trip.

River and tidal warnings

Several rings include river navigations that close on stream warnings — always check Environment Agency and Canal & River Trust notices before committing to a river day:

  • Avon Ring — non-tidal Severn and non-tidal Avon
  • Droitwich Ring — short non-tidal Severn section
  • Stourport Ring — non-tidal Severn (Worcester to Stourport)
  • Leicester Ring — non-tidal River Soar and non-tidal River Trent (Sawley to Derwent Mouth)
  • Thames Ring — non-tidal Thames (Oxford to Teddington); the tidal Thames (Teddington to Brentford / Limehouse) is forbidden by most hire firms
  • North Pennine Ring — Aire & Calder Navigation (large commercial-style locks; not tidal on the standard route)

None of the standard rings require crews to handle a major tidal estuary as part of the core route, though the Thames Ring and any extension via the Trent below Cromwell would.

Tunnel skills required

Long, unlit tunnels are common to several rings. Crews unfamiliar with tunnel passage should brief in advance:

  • Standedge Tunnel (3 mi 418 yd) — South Pennine Ring. Convoy with chaperone, booking essential, size restrictions.
  • Harecastle Tunnel (1.7 mi) — Four Counties Ring. CRT lock-keeper convoy, one-way operation.
  • Dudley Tunnel (3,154 yd) — Stourbridge Ring. Closed to powered craft; tug or Netherton variant.
  • Netherton Tunnel (3,027 yd) — Stourbridge Ring (variant). Wide, with towpath, straightforward.
  • Wast Hills / West Hill Tunnel (~2,700 yd) — Avon, Stourport. Unlit narrow tunnel.
  • Foulridge (1,640 yd) — North Pennine Ring. One-way timed operation.
  • Crick (~1,528 yd) — Leicester Ring. Unlit.
  • Husbands Bosworth (~1,160 yd) — Leicester Ring. Unlit.
