Day Hire Self-Drive Canal Boats
What's in this hub
This page indexes self-drive day-boat hire across the UK canal and river network. Day boats are an unbeatable way to try canal cruising before committing to a full week, to entertain visiting family for an afternoon, or to celebrate a birthday or hen / stag party on the water without any overnight commitment. No qualifications are required — every operator gives a short tuition before you set off, typically 20–40 minutes covering steering, locks (where present) and emergency stops.
What to expect
A typical day-hire is 8–10 hours, picked up around 9:30 and back by 5pm. Boats range from small steel narrowboats (six to eight people) up to wider broad-beams that take 10 or 12. Some operators offer half-day hire (morning or afternoon, four to five hours) at a lower price.
Lock-free pounds make for the most relaxed day-boat experience — think the Bridgewater out of Boothstown or Worsley, the Llangollen south of Pontcysyllte, the Ashby out of Stoke Golding, or the Mon & Brec around Govilon. Day boats on lock-flight stretches are perfectly possible but tend to suit groups with at least one person willing to hop off and work locks; expect a slower turnaround.
Cruising character for day-hire
- Pace: typical canal speed is 3–4 mph. A 4-mile out-and-back with a single lock is a comfortable half-day. A 7–8 mile out-and-back with no locks is a full day.
- Catering: most operators allow you to bring your own food and drink. Some boats have on-board cookers and small fridges; others are dry-fit-out only.
- Pets and children: nearly all operators allow well-behaved dogs (small fee may apply). Buoyancy aids for under-12s are usually provided free.
- Returns: be back well before the published time — late returns often incur an hourly surcharge.

Choosing a day-boat trip
- First-time on water? Pick a lock-free pound. The Bridgewater, Ashby, Mon & Brec and Lancaster all have long lock-free reaches.
- Group of 10+? Confirm capacity — most narrowboat day boats max at 12 with a few configurations going to 14.
- Wheelchair access? A handful of operators have step-free or hoist-equipped boats — ask explicitly.
- Want to experience a lock? Pick a base near a single lock or a short flight (Stoke Bruerne, Foxton bottom, Tardebigge bottom) so you can do one or two and turn back.
