About the South Stratford Canal

Quick Facts

  • Length: 25.5 miles
  • Locks: 54 narrow locks (Lapworth flight 18, Wilmcote flight 11, plus smaller groups)
  • Connects: Kings Norton Junction (Worcester & Birmingham Canal) → Lapworth Junction (Grand Union Canal at Kingswood) → Wootton Wawen → Wilmcote → Bancroft Basin, Stratford-upon-Avon (junction with the River Avon)
  • Build period & engineer: opened in stages 1796–1816, engineered by Josiah Clowes and William Whitmore. Saved from closure by the National Trust in 1964 — a foundational moment in canal restoration.
  • Boat dimensions: 70 ft long by 7 ft beam (narrow). Some short locks — particularly Lock 47 on the Wilmcote flight — require care for full-length boats.
  • Typical cruise time: 2–3 days end-to-end (lock-heavy)

What's it like to cruise?

A quintessential narrow canal that drops 200 ft from the Birmingham plateau to the River Avon at Stratford. Two-section character: Northern (King's Norton to Lapworth, level and gentle) and Southern (Lapworth to Stratford, steady drop with two big lock flights). Distinctive features include split bridges (with a gap to let the towrope through), barrel-roof lock cottages, and the Edstone, Wootton Wawen and Yarningale aqueducts. A key leg of the Avon Ring.

Highlights along the route

  • Lapworth Locks — 18 narrow locks dropping the canal off the Birmingham plateau.
  • Wilmcote Locks — 11 narrow locks in just over a mile, the final descent into Stratford.
  • Edstone Aqueduct — 475 ft long cast-iron trough, the longest in England.
  • Bancroft Basin, Stratford — the canal-river junction in the heart of Shakespeare's town.
  • Lapworth Junction — pretty triangular junction with the Grand Union, with cottages and good moorings.
  • Split bridges — the unique cantilever bridges where the gap let the horse rope pass without unhitching.

Connections & cruising rings

Joins the Worcester & Birmingham at King's Norton, the Grand Union at Lapworth/Kingswood, and the River Avon at Stratford. Forms the Avon Ring (Stratford + W&B + Severn + Avon) and a leg of the Warwickshire Ring via the Grand Union connection.

Suitable for

Intermediate boaters. The lock count is high and the chambers are old and need careful handling. The southern section is the steeper, harder day. National Trust ownership history means the canal feels well-loved and beautifully maintained.

Practicalities

  • Stoppages: standard winter maintenance; occasional Lapworth or Wilmcote gate works.
  • Water and elsan: King's Norton, Lapworth, Lowsonford, Wootton Wawen, Wilmcote, Stratford (Bancroft).
  • Mobile signal: good throughout.
  • Pump-out: at marinas en route.
  • Bancroft Basin: limited 48-hour visitor moorings — book ahead during festival weekends.

Best time to cruise

April to October. Stratford is busiest in the school holidays and during Royal Shakespeare Company runs. Late May/early June is a good combination of weather and quieter moorings.
