About the Rochdale Canal
Quick Facts
- Rochdale Canal: 32 miles, 91 locks (originally 92, with the modern Tuel Lane Lock combining locks 3 and 4 into the deepest in the country at 19 ft 8 in)
- Calder & Hebble Navigation: approximately 21 miles, 27 locks (mixed canal cuts and river sections)
- Connects: Manchester (Castlefield, junction with the Bridgewater) → Sowerby Bridge (junction between the two) → Wakefield (junction with the Aire & Calder)
- Build period & engineer: Rochdale opened 1804 (William Jessop / John Rennie); Calder & Hebble opened 1770 (John Smeaton)
- Boat dimensions: Calder & Hebble lock chambers limit length to 57 ft 6 in by 14 ft beam — the most restrictive length on any cruising ring. Rochdale takes 71 ft 11 in by 13 ft 2 in beam.
- Typical cruise time: 7–10 days for the trans-Pennine combination Manchester to Wakefield
What's it like to cruise?
A demanding trans-Pennine combination. The Rochdale climbs hard over the South Pennines through the steep Calderdale valley with locks every few hundred yards in places — one of the lockiest canals in Britain. The Calder & Hebble is the eastern descent, alternating between canal cuts and the River Calder itself, with river-style locks and weirs to be aware of after rain. The 57 ft 6 in lock length on the C&H is the binding constraint — full-length narrowboats cannot use it without going onto the diagonal in the lock chamber (some chambers can take a 60 ft boat at an angle, but plan around 57 ft).
Highlights along the route
- Tuel Lane Lock — the deepest lock in Britain at 19 ft 8 in, manned and bookable.
- Hebden Bridge — the Pennine cult town, with canalside cafes and excellent moorings.
- Todmorden — handsome stone Pennine market town at a railway-canal junction.
- Sowerby Bridge — the lower terminus of the Rochdale and the head of the Calder & Hebble.
- Brighouse Basin — pretty restored basin on the C&H.
- Standedge of the South Pennines — the Rochdale crosses the watershed at a 600 ft summit.
Connections & cruising rings
The Rochdale forms one side of the South Pennine Ring (with the Calder & Hebble, Huddersfield Narrow, Ashton and Bridgewater). The C&H also connects to the Aire & Calder via the Wakefield Branch, opening routes east to the Trent system.
Suitable for
Experienced boaters. The lock count and lock spacing make the Rochdale very physical work. The C&H length limit makes ring choices fiddly — check your boat's exact length. Hire firms in the area know the route and brief crews well; first-timers should not start here.
Practicalities
- Tuel Lane Lock: keeper-operated; book passage in season.
- Stoppages: the Rochdale summit is reservoir-fed and water restrictions are common in dry years.
- Water and elsan: Manchester (Castlefield), Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Sowerby Bridge, Brighouse, Mirfield, Wakefield.
- Mobile signal: good in the valley towns; limited at the summit.
- Pump-out: at marinas along the route — fewer than on the southern canals so plan ahead.
Best time to cruise
May to September. Pennine weather can turn quickly. Late spring is best for water levels.
