What's it like to cruise?
The Llangollen is the most popular holiday cruising canal in the UK and it earns the reputation. The lower section through the Cheshire Plain is gentle pastoral cruising; the upper section climbs into the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains and crosses into Wales. The canal is unusually shallow and narrow in places — it functions partly as a water feeder from the River Dee — so progress is slower than a typical narrow canal and passing oncoming traffic at the famous aqueducts and tunnels needs patience. Expect queues at Pontcysyllte and Hurleston in summer.
Highlights along the route
- Pontcysyllte Aqueduct — 1,007 ft long, 126 ft above the River Dee. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The most spectacular aqueduct in Britain.
- Chirk Aqueduct and Tunnel — 70 ft high, 710 ft long aqueduct over the Ceiriog Valley, immediately followed by the 421-yard Chirk Tunnel.
- Horseshoe Falls and Llantysilio — Telford's elegant weir on the River Dee, the canal's water source.
- Llangollen Basin — terminus, with the steam railway, the Dee gorge and the town a short walk away.
- Ellesmere — the lakeside town with the Ellesmere Arm spur and good moorings.
- Whitchurch and Wrenbury — pleasant market town stops.
Connections & cruising rings
The canal joins the Shropshire Union main line at Hurleston Junction. The Montgomery Canal branches off at Frankton Junction (booked passage required, restoration ongoing). The Llangollen does not form a ring on its own — most boaters cruise it out and back from a Cheshire base, or as part of the "Four Counties Ring" extension via the Shroppie.
Suitable for
Strong on scenery and engineering, manageable on locks. Hurleston (4 locks) and Grindley Brook (6, including a 3-rise staircase) are the main lock challenges. The aqueducts are exposed — boaters with a fear of heights should know that Pontcysyllte has no railing on the offside of the trough. Otherwise this is a good intermediate-level canal; not the easiest first-time route because of summer congestion and the staircase at Grindley Brook.
Practicalities
- Stoppages: Hurleston Locks have had recurring rebuild works in recent years — check Canal & River Trust stoppage notices before booking.
- Water and elsan: facilities at Hurleston, Wrenbury, Whitchurch, Ellesmere, Chirk Marina, Trevor and Llangollen Basin.
- Mobile signal: patchy in the Welsh hills above Chirk; reasonable across the Cheshire section.
- Pump-out: at most marinas along the route; Wrenbury, Whixall, Ellesmere and Trevor are the main options.
- Llangollen Basin moorings are limited and bookable in advance through CRT; expect to be turned around if you arrive without one in peak season.
Best time to cruise
May, June and September give the best balance of weather and crowds. July and August are very busy — Pontcysyllte and Grindley Brook can have multi-hour waits. Autumn cruising is beautiful in the Dee Valley but Llangollen Basin closes earlier in the season.
