About the Lancaster Canal
Quick Facts
- Length: 41 miles currently navigable (Preston to Tewitfield, north of Carnforth); historically 57 miles to Kendal
- Locks: none on the navigable main line (the canal is famously the longest lock-free pound in Britain). The 8-lock Glasson Branch leads down to the Lune estuary.
- Connects: Preston (currently isolated from the main network) → Tewitfield (head of navigation, restoration ongoing northward to Kendal). Glasson Branch links to the tidal Lune estuary.
- Build period & engineer: opened in stages 1797–1819, engineered by John Rennie
- Boat dimensions: 72 ft long by approximately 14 ft 6 in beam on the main line; Glasson Branch locks restrict to 72 ft by 14 ft 6 in.
- Typical cruise time: 2–3 days end-to-end on the navigable section; Glasson Branch adds half a day each way
What's it like to cruise?
A beautiful, rural and isolated canal — currently cut off from the main connected network by the M6 motorway (Tewitfield Locks were severed when the motorway was built). The cruising is gentle and lock-free for 41 miles, through some of the prettiest pastoral scenery in Lancashire and Cumbria, with views to the Lakeland hills. Quiet, low-traffic, and the only way onto the canal is to launch locally or to bring a boat over the Ribble Link from the main network.
Highlights along the route
- Lune Aqueduct — Rennie's masterpiece, a five-arched stone aqueduct 60 ft above the River Lune, just north of Lancaster.
- Glasson Dock — the branch terminus on the Lune estuary, an attractive little harbour.
- Lancaster — the canal passes through the city under the historic Aqueduct Street and offers central moorings.
- Hest Bank — the closest the canal gets to the Morecambe Bay coast, with sea views.
- Tewitfield Locks — currently the head of navigation, with the restoration project visible.
Connections & cruising rings
Currently isolated from the main network. The seasonal Ribble Link connects via the Savick Brook to the tidal Ribble (booked passage with CRT, weather and tide dependent), giving access to/from the Leeds & Liverpool's Rufford Branch. The Glasson Branch leads to the Lune estuary but is not a connection to the wider system.
Suitable for
Excellent for beginners — lock-free, deep, quiet. Ideal for short breaks and family cruising. Ribble Link passage requires confidence in tidal water and is for experienced crews only.
Practicalities
- Ribble Link: booked passage only, limited tide windows, full season restrictions.
- Water and elsan: at Preston, Garstang, Lancaster, Carnforth and Tewitfield.
- Mobile signal: generally good across the lowland route.
- Pump-out: at the marinas — Garstang, Lancaster, Carnforth.
Best time to cruise
May to September. The Lakeland views and pastoral setting are at their best in late spring and early autumn.
