Diesel-fired central heating systems like Eberspacher and Webasto units are another reliable option, especially for boats that cruise a lot.
Whichever system you use, proper ventilation is critical. Carbon monoxide is a real risk in the confined space of a narrowboat, so always have a working CO alarm and make sure your flue is correctly installed and regularly swept. The Boat Safety Scheme requires adequate fixed ventilation for all fuel-burning appliances.
If you're fitting a new stove or appliance, use an installer who understands marine applications. Domestic fitters may not appreciate the differences in flue routing, hearth requirements, and air supply on a boat. A badly fitted stove can be a fire risk or fail a BSS examination.
