The Droitwich Ring — Canal Cruising Ring

Overview

The Droitwich Ring is a short, lock-heavy circuit in Worcestershire, opened to through navigation in 2011 after the restoration of the Droitwich Barge Canal and the Droitwich Junction Canal. It runs to approximately 21 miles with around 32 locks. Most crews complete it in 3 to 5 days at a relaxed pace, making it one of the shortest practical cruising rings on the network.

Route

The ring links four navigations:

  • Worcester & Birmingham Canal (Hanbury Junction down to Worcester)
  • River Severn (Worcester to Hawford)
  • Droitwich Barge Canal (Hawford to Droitwich Spa)
  • Droitwich Junction Canal (Droitwich Spa to Hanbury Junction, rejoining the Worcester & Birmingham)

Highlights

  • Vines Park in the centre of Droitwich Spa — a town-centre mooring rare on the network
  • The restored barge locks on the Droitwich Barge Canal (broad locks, unusually for a Worcestershire restoration)
  • The new Junction Canal locks rebuilt as part of the 2011 restoration
  • Worcester Cathedral and the Severn waterfront
  • Hanbury Wharf and the Eagle & Sun pub

Difficulty

Approximately 32 locks across 21 miles is a very high lock density, but the ring is short enough that crews can pace themselves. The Droitwich Barge Canal has wide locks (the original was built to take Severn trows); the Junction Canal locks are narrow. The Severn section between Worcester and Hawford is short but is a wide commercial-style river — boats need to be confident on flowing water and call ahead to the Bevere or Hawford lock keepers. Stream warnings on the Severn close the ring entirely, so it is weather-sensitive.

Suitable for

First-time hirers willing to do plenty of locks; ideal as a long-weekend or short-week trip; a good "first ring" for crews who want to test themselves before committing to a fortnight on the Avon or Stourport. Two crew minimum; three is more comfortable for the Junction Canal flight.

Where to start

Common hire bases include Alvechurch, Tardebigge, Stoke Prior, Worcester and Droitwich Spa itself. Hanbury Wharf is a popular starting point because it sits at the top of the Junction Canal.

Practicalities

  • Stoppages and pinch points: the Droitwich Junction Canal includes the M5 motorway crossing and a small staircase pair (Locks 2 and 3) — straightforward but tight. The barge canal is wide and quiet.
  • River section: short but exposed. Always check Severn stream warnings before leaving Worcester or Hawford. CRT lock keepers operate Bevere and Hawford locks during published hours only.
  • The Droitwich canals have CRT-operated swing bridges that need a windlass and a willing crew member.
  • Mobile signal is generally good across the ring.

Best time of year

Late spring through early autumn. The ring is short enough to slot into a long weekend at almost any time, but Severn closures in winter and after heavy rain are common. Avoid mid-August if you want a quiet Vines Park mooring — Droitwich is busy in school holidays.
