The Stourport Ring — Canal Cruising Ring

Overview

The Stourport Ring is a popular medium-length cruising circuit in the West Midlands and Worcestershire, taking in two canals, the BCN and a stretch of the River Severn. It runs to approximately 74 miles with around 118 locks. Most crews complete it in 7 to 10 days at a relaxed 4-hour-day pace, though the lock count makes it busy work for a one-week trip.

Route

The ring links four navigations in a clockwise loop:

  • Worcester & Birmingham Canal (Birmingham to Worcester)
  • River Severn (Worcester to Stourport-on-Severn)
  • Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal (Stourport to Aldersley Junction, Wolverhampton)
  • BCN Main Line (Aldersley back to central Birmingham)

Highlights

  • The Tardebigge flight — 30 narrow locks in a little over two miles, the longest lock flight in the UK
  • The Stoke flight (six locks) immediately below Tardebigge
  • Stourport-on-Severn basins — a Georgian canal town built around the canal–river junction
  • Worcester Cathedral and the Severn waterfront
  • The Wolverhampton 21 climbing back into the BCN
  • Gas Street Basin and the Birmingham waterfront
  • The Galton Bridge cutting on the BCN New Main Line

Difficulty

Approximately 118 locks across 74 miles is a high lock density, dominated by the Tardebigge / Stoke flights (36 locks down) and the Wolverhampton 21 (21 locks up). The Severn section between Worcester and Stourport is short but is a wide, flowing river with large mechanised locks operated by CRT lock keepers. Stream warnings on the Severn close the ring entirely — typically a winter and shoulder-season risk. No tidal sections. The West Hill (Wast Hills) Tunnel on the Worcester & Birmingham is around 2,700 yards, unlit, and the longest tunnel encountered.

Suitable for

A relaxed two-week cruise, a brisk one-week trip for fit crews, or a 10-day cruise for first-time hirers willing to commit to long lock days. Three crew makes Tardebigge and the Wolverhampton 21 substantially more pleasant.

Where to start

Common hire bases include Alvechurch, Tardebigge, Stoke Prior, Worcester, Stourport, Kinver, Penkridge and central Birmingham. Alvechurch and Tardebigge are popular launch points; starting at Worcester or Stourport gives crews the river section on day one.

Practicalities

  • Stoppages and pinch points: Tardebigge queues in summer and is best tackled with a fresh crew; allow a full day. The Wolverhampton 21 also queues. Both Stoke and Lapworth (off-ring) are common stoppage targets in winter.
  • River section: Severn stream warnings close the ring. Check CRT notices daily. Bevere and Holt locks are CRT-keeper operated in season.
  • BCN urban sections — Wolverhampton, Smethwick, central Birmingham — keep valuables out of sight overnight. Most crews find the ring entirely fine in daylight.
  • Mobile signal is generally good across the ring, with brief gaps in the deeper W&B cuttings.

Best time of year

Late spring through early autumn. The Severn is most reliable from May to September. Avoid mid-winter unless you are happy to lay over for river closures and stoppages on Tardebigge or the Wolverhampton 21.
