Canal Boat Breakdown and Recovery

What this covers

On-water assistance when something goes wrong: engine won't start, fuel problems, fouled propeller, sinking or grounding, electrical failure, or being stuck in a lock. Cover is usually sold on a membership basis (annual subscription, no per-callout fee) by specialist providers — most prominently River Canal Rescue (RCR) — though some marinas and engineering yards offer ad-hoc paid call-outs.

What to look for

  • Geographic coverage matched to where you cruise — the major schemes cover the whole connected UK network, but smaller operators may be regional.
  • What's actually included: engine and propulsion as standard, with electrical, plumbing, gas and parts cover usually as paid extras.
  • 24/7 vs daytime-only response, and the published target attendance time.
  • Whether parts are included or you pay for materials separately. Most schemes charge for parts above a small allowance.
  • Salvage and pump-out provision — important for boats with shallow freeboard or older bilges.
  • Membership-tier transparency: read what each tier excludes (continuous cruisers, hire boats, commercial use are sometimes priced differently).
  • Red flags: no published response targets, no out-of-hours number, vague position on whether the engineer is employed or sub-contracted.

Common questions

Do I really need it? If you cruise more than occasionally, yes. Single mid-canal call-outs without cover frequently run into several hundred pounds before parts.

Will my insurance cover breakdown? Insurance covers damage and liability, not mechanical failure. Breakdown cover is a separate product, though some insurers bundle it.

Can I call them for things other than the engine? Within the limits of your cover tier, yes — fouled props, gas issues, electrical faults and sinkings are all common call-outs.

How long do I wait? Typical response on the connected network is same-day in working hours; longer in remote spots or out of hours.

What about widebeams and Dutch barges? Most major schemes cover them but premium and parts pricing differs — check before assuming standard narrowboat rates apply.

When you need this

Year-round if you cruise actively, and especially before long trips, ring journeys, or any cruising in winter when boatyard cover is thinner. Continuous cruisers and liveaboards usually treat it as essential.
