South East England Marinas and Moorings
What's in this region
This hub indexes marinas and long-term moorings on the waterways of London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire (eastern), Norfolk and Suffolk. Waterways covered include the Lee and Stort Navigations, Regent's Canal and the Paddington Arm, the lower Grand Union (Aylesbury arm and Slough arm), the River Nene, the Great Ouse, the Middle Levels, the Cam, the Norfolk Broads and the East Anglian rivers.
Cruising character (and what it means for moorings)
The South East splits into three quite different cruising worlds. The London canals (Lee, Stort, Regent's, Paddington Arm, lower Grand Union) are urban, narrow and busy — moorings are scarce, expensive and tightly held. The East Anglian rivers (Nene, Great Ouse, Middle Levels, Cam) are wide, lock-light and quiet, with marinas spaced out and easier to find berth in. The Norfolk Broads are tidal, wide-water, and sailing-cruiser as much as motor — marinas are often boatyard-and-chandlery operations rather than moorings-only basins.
The Broads' tidal sections (Yarmouth, Breydon, lower Bure, lower Yare) require tidal planning for any passage; marinas above the locks at Geldeston and on the upper Bure / Ant / Thurne sit in non-tidal water.
