Canal Holiday FAQ
A canal holiday is unlike most other holidays. You move at walking pace, you steer your own boat, and the scenery rolls past your kitchen window. If you have never done it before, you probably have a lot of practical questions. This page rounds up the questions we get asked most often, and links to longer guides on each topic.
Do I need any boating experience?
No. Hire firms give you a handover lesson before you set off, and most first-time crews are confident enough by the second day. Canals run at around four miles per hour, which is roughly the speed of a brisk walk, so mistakes happen slowly. See boat skills and experience.
How much does a canal holiday cost?
A week on a hire boat in the UK typically costs between roughly £600 and £2,500 in 2026, depending on boat size, season and starting base. Diesel, gas, parking and bedding are usually included. See canal holiday costs.
When is the best time to go?
April to October is the main hire season. May, June and September tend to offer the best mix of weather, daylight and price. Peak summer is busy at locks; off-season trips are quieter and cheaper but colder. See when is the best time for a canal holiday.
Where should I cruise?
Pick a route by the time you have. A "ring" lets you do a circular tour without retracing your steps; a linear route is a there-and-back. Allow around four hours of cruising a day and add an hour for every two locks. See choosing a canal route.
What size boat do we need?
Berths are quoted as a maximum, not a comfortable number. A "six berth" boat is usually most comfortable for four adults plus a child. Couples often prefer a 2-4 berth for the extra living space. See choosing your hireboat.
Are canals safe?
Yes, but the water is cold and the locks are heavy. Children should wear life jackets on deck, and lock work is the single biggest source of minor injuries. See safe canal holiday boating.
Can we bring the dog?
Most hire firms welcome dogs for a small extra fee per dog per week. There are usually limits on the number of pets per boat. See canal holidays with dogs and pets.
Can older or less-mobile guests enjoy a canal holiday?
Yes. Locks are the main physical challenge; lock-free routes exist, and a stronger crew member can do the heavy work. A small number of operators have boats fitted with hoists, wider gangways and accessible bathrooms. See accessible canal holidays and canal holidays for older people.
What about food and toilets?
Most boats have a small but functional galley, fridge, gas hob, hot water and a flushing toilet (cassette or pump-out). You can easily cook on board, eat at canalside pubs, or do both. See canal holiday eating and drinking.
What should we pack?
Layered clothing, waterproofs, sturdy non-slip shoes, gloves for lock work, a torch, and any prescriptions. Hire boats supply bedding, towels and basic kitchen kit. See what to pack for a canal holiday.
How do I book?
Book 6-9 months ahead for school holidays, 2-3 months for shoulder season, last-minute for off-peak. See booking a canal holiday.
